New Dimension @ Art IN Kaohsiung 2025
June 5 - 8, 2025
Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal

Exploring new spaces where knowledge can flourish is fundamental to growth, opening pathways to unprecedented creativity. For our inaugural presentation in Kaohsiung, we embrace the importance of stepping beyond familiar boundaries—a vital step toward learning and transformation. This showcase brings together innovative and visionary artists from Japan and Taiwan, introducing a fresh dimension, sparking new connections across cultures, and promoting a deeper appreciation of their unique creative expression.

The presentation features kinetic works by Taiwanese artist Yi Ting Tsai; expressive calligraphy by Japanese artist Junichi Ito; masterfully crafted, innovative glass sculptures by Japanese artist Toshio Iezumi; intricate drawings by Japanese artist Tomoaki Murayama; the captivating blue of Japanese artist Ryota Kanno; and ANT’s cosmic world of miniature architecture—centered around the ant.

My connection with Taiwan began in 2014. That year, I participated in an exhibition focused on Japan-Taiwan exchange. Since then, through joint exhibitions, solo shows in Taipei, and an artist-in-residence program in Taitung, my ties with Taiwan have grown deeper and more meaningful.

Taiwan is the place that opened my eyes to the possibilities of art. It remains one of the most important countries to me. I still vividly remember the moment I felt that art could transcend borders, cultures, and various barriers.

Although I may not yet be strong enough to represent Japan, I hope to continue contributing to the friendship between Japan and Taiwan, including through my role as a full international member of the National Palace Museum.

PAST EXHIBITIONS

Junichi Ito: A Solo Exhibition
March 18 - April 5, 2025

Parallel + is thrilled to announce the solo exhibition of Junichi Ito in Hong Kong, coinciding with the vibrant Hong Kong Art Week. This exhibition traces Junichi Ito’s journey of self- discovery through the art of calligraphy, exploring how tradition can be reinterpreted to remain relevant in the contemporary world. Through his work, Ito seeks to convey a message that extends beyond his home, Japan and Hong Kong, resonating globally and enduring for generations to come.

Japanese characters carry profound meaning, and for this exhibition, Ito has carefully selected those he believes will inspire contemplation and offer insight into his artistic vision. Among the highlights is 阿吽 (Aun), a character rooted in Buddhism that signifies the beginning and end of the universe. The phrase Ah-Un no Kokyū embodies an unspoken understanding—a perfect synchronicity between individuals. Derived from the Sanskrit A- hum, it reflects the concept of Yin and Yang, symbolizing the harmony of complementary forces in Buddhist and Shinto traditions.

For our debut at Art Fair Philippines 2025, we are excited to present “A Thousand Years: A Vessel For Perpetual Existence.” This exhibition underscores our commitment to partnering with visionaries, deepening our appreciation for contemporary art and bespoke design, and sharing this with the audience across Asia. Parallel + will spotlight artists whose groundbreaking approaches and unique artistic philosophies aspire to create works that will endure for a thousand years.

Drawing inspiration from Botticelli, each artist aspires to transcend mere physical aesthetics, delving into the realms of time, space, and the embodiment of knowledge and each practices through their creations. From the Renaissance to the Neoclassical period and into the modern era, the masterpieces of these periods have provided contemporary artists with a renewed sense of revival, enriching their perpetual artistic credo. The enduring legacy of these practices and works shapes the artists that Parallel + will present at the fair, profoundly influencing who they are today. Through their creations, these artists explore the very essence of existence, contemplating what it means to endure and remain relevant across centuries.

"Hazama - Road of Memory" by Ataro Matsuo, 2015, Collage of Burned Papery and Dictionary and Gouche on Panel, 50.2 x 50.2 x 1.8 cm, ¥120,000.JPG

Hazama by Ataro Matsuo

December 6 - January 10, 2025

This exhibition invites audiences to engage with the artist's deep investigation into the boundaries of dimensions and the hidden layers of perception. Matsuo, who meandered from Nagasaki to Kyoto and now resides and works in Saga, studied sculpture at the Kyoto University of Art and Design. There, he cultivated a distinctive vision that blurs the line between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, shaped by a decade of collaboration with master printmaker Shoichi Ida, who is considered as one of the most significant figures in the "Golden Age of Contemporary Prints," a period of significant development in Japanese printmaking during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Through Ida’s influence, he embraced printmaking, but with a transformative lens, treating paper as a multidimensional medium imbued with historical weight, cultural significance, and a potential to evoke profound spatial depth.

At the heart of his practice is a process of layering paper over surfaces of text, including fragments from his treasured newspapers and magazines. These, however, are not meant to convey information but to act as silent witnesses, presenting words and images that peer through the layered compositions. Without a fixed narrative, his works invite viewers to explore, drawing meaning from these fragments and finding their own questions reflected back. This approach to language as open-ended allows each viewer a personal dialogue, sparking an introspective journey as they encounter the works

At the heart of this showcase lies the incredible power of lines – the seemingly simple strokes on panelor sculptural forms that possess a remarkable ability to convey motion and vitality. These lines defy the confines of two-dimensional space, inviting viewers to step into a world of dynamic artistic expression.
